District of Columbia: ITIN Driver's License Guide

Requirements

  • Valid ITIN (SSN not required for limited-purpose license)
  • Proof of DC residency
  • Proof of identity and date of birth

Required Documents

  • ITIN letter (CP565 or CP567)
  • Foreign passport (valid)
  • Two proofs of DC residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease)
  • DC tax return or W-2 showing ITIN

Steps

  1. 1 Gather all required documents
  2. 2 Schedule an appointment at DC DMV
  3. 3 Complete the driver license application form
  4. 4 Pass the written knowledge test (25 questions, need 20 correct)
  5. 5 Pass the vision test
  6. 6 Pay the $47 application fee
  7. 7 Schedule and pass the road skills test

Important Notes

  • DC allows all residents to obtain a limited-purpose driver's license regardless of immigration status since 2014
  • The limited-purpose license is marked "NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES" and cannot be used for REAL ID
