District of Columbia: ITIN Driver's License Guide
Requirements
- • Valid ITIN (SSN not required for limited-purpose license)
- • Proof of DC residency
- • Proof of identity and date of birth
Required Documents
- ITIN letter (CP565 or CP567)
- Foreign passport (valid)
- Two proofs of DC residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease)
- DC tax return or W-2 showing ITIN
Steps
- 1 Gather all required documents
- 2 Schedule an appointment at DC DMV
- 3 Complete the driver license application form
- 4 Pass the written knowledge test (25 questions, need 20 correct)
- 5 Pass the vision test
- 6 Pay the $47 application fee
- 7 Schedule and pass the road skills test
Important Notes
- DC allows all residents to obtain a limited-purpose driver's license regardless of immigration status since 2014
- The limited-purpose license is marked "NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES" and cannot be used for REAL ID
