Hawaii: ITIN Driver's License Guide

Requirements

  • Valid ITIN (SSN not required for limited-purpose driver's license)
  • Proof of Hawaii residency
  • Proof of identity and date of birth

Required Documents

  • ITIN letter (CP565 or CP567)
  • Foreign passport (valid)
  • Two proofs of Hawaii residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease)
  • Foreign birth certificate or consular ID (as supporting document)

Steps

  1. 1 Gather all required documents
  2. 2 Visit a Hawaii county driver licensing office
  3. 3 Complete the driver license application
  4. 4 Pass the written knowledge test (30 questions, need 24 correct)
  5. 5 Pass the vision test
  6. 6 Pay the $40 application fee
  7. 7 Schedule and pass the road test

Important Notes

  • Hawaii allows all residents to apply for a limited-purpose license regardless of immigration status
  • The limited-purpose license is marked and cannot be used for federal identification purposes
