Louisiana: ITIN Driver's License Guide

Requirements

  • Social Security Number required (ITIN not accepted)
  • Proof of lawful presence in the United States
  • Proof of Louisiana residency
  • Proof of identity (US or foreign passport)

Required Documents

  • SSN card (ITIN is not accepted)
  • Valid immigration documents (visa, I-94, EAD, I-551)
  • Certified birth certificate or valid passport
  • Two proofs of Louisiana residency (utility bill, lease)

Steps

  1. 1 Obtain an SSN — you must have work authorization to get one
  2. 2 Gather all identity and residency documents
  3. 3 Visit an OMV (Office of Motor Vehicles) location
  4. 4 Complete the application form DPSMV 2001
  5. 5 Pass the written knowledge test (40 questions, need 32 correct)
  6. 6 Pass the vision test
  7. 7 Pay the $32.25 license fee
  8. 8 Pass the road skills test

Important Notes

  • Louisiana requires proof of lawful presence — an ITIN alone is NOT sufficient
  • DACA recipients with a valid EAD may apply for a limited-term license
