Maine: ITIN Driver's License Guide

Requirements

  • Social Security Number required (ITIN not accepted)
  • Proof of lawful presence in the United States
  • Proof of Maine residency
  • Proof of identity and date of birth

Required Documents

  • SSN card or W-2 showing full SSN
  • Valid passport with US visa or I-94
  • Proof of Maine address (utility bill, bank statement, lease)
  • US birth certificate or foreign passport for identity

Steps

  1. 1 Obtain an SSN through authorized employment or immigration status
  2. 2 Gather all identity and residency documents
  3. 3 Visit a Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) office
  4. 4 Complete the license application
  5. 5 Pass the written knowledge test (30 questions, need 24 correct)
  6. 6 Pass the vision test
  7. 7 Pay the $35 license fee
  8. 8 Pass the road test

Important Notes

  • Maine requires proof of lawful presence — an ITIN alone is NOT sufficient for a license
  • Temporary license duration matches immigration document expiration date
