Maine: ITIN Driver's License Guide
Requirements
- • Social Security Number required (ITIN not accepted)
- • Proof of lawful presence in the United States
- • Proof of Maine residency
- • Proof of identity and date of birth
Required Documents
- SSN card or W-2 showing full SSN
- Valid passport with US visa or I-94
- Proof of Maine address (utility bill, bank statement, lease)
- US birth certificate or foreign passport for identity
Steps
- 1 Obtain an SSN through authorized employment or immigration status
- 2 Gather all identity and residency documents
- 3 Visit a Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) office
- 4 Complete the license application
- 5 Pass the written knowledge test (30 questions, need 24 correct)
- 6 Pass the vision test
- 7 Pay the $35 license fee
- 8 Pass the road test
Important Notes
- Maine requires proof of lawful presence — an ITIN alone is NOT sufficient for a license
- Temporary license duration matches immigration document expiration date
