Michigan: ITIN Driver's License Guide
Requirements
- • Social Security Number required (ITIN not accepted)
- • Proof of lawful presence in the United States
- • Proof of Michigan residency
- • Proof of identity (certified birth certificate or valid passport)
Required Documents
- SSN card (ITIN is not accepted)
- Valid immigration documents (I-551, I-94, EAD, I-797)
- Certified birth certificate or valid passport
- Two documents proving Michigan residency
Steps
- 1 Obtain an SSN — you must have authorized immigration status
- 2 Gather all identity, residency, and immigration documents
- 3 Visit a Secretary of State (SOS) branch office
- 4 Complete the application form
- 5 Pass the written knowledge test (50 questions, need 40 correct)
- 6 Pass the vision test
- 7 Pay the $25 license fee
- 8 Pass the road skills test
Important Notes
- Michigan requires proof of lawful presence — an ITIN alone is NOT sufficient
- Limited-term licenses are issued to non-permanent residents and expire with immigration documents
