Ohio: ITIN Driver's License Guide
Requirements
- • Proof of lawful presence in the United States
- • Valid SSN (ITIN alone is not accepted)
- • Proof of Ohio residency
- • Proof of full legal name and date of birth
Required Documents
- Valid passport with US visa and I-94, EAD, or approved I-797
- Social Security card
- Two documents proving Ohio residency (bank statement, utility bill)
- Certified birth certificate or valid foreign passport
Steps
- 1 Obtain an SSN through authorized employment status
- 2 Gather all required documents (identity, SSN, residency, lawful presence)
- 3 Visit an Ohio BMV office (no appointment needed)
- 4 Complete application form BMV 5789
- 5 Pass the written knowledge test (40 questions, need 30 correct)
- 6 Pass the vision screening
- 7 Pay the $25.75 temporary permit fee
- 8 Complete required practice driving and pass the maneuverability/road test
Important Notes
- Ohio requires proof of lawful presence — an ITIN alone is NOT sufficient to get a driver's license
- Non-citizens receive a license valid only through their authorized stay period
