South Dakota: ITIN Driver's License Guide

Requirements

  • Proof of lawful presence in the United States
  • Valid SSN (ITIN alone is not accepted)
  • Proof of South Dakota residency
  • Proof of identity and date of birth

Required Documents

  • Valid passport with US visa, I-94, EAD, or I-551/I-797 documentation
  • Social Security card (SSN required)
  • Two proofs of SD residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease agreement)
  • Birth certificate or valid foreign passport

Steps

  1. 1 Obtain an SSN through authorized employment or immigration status
  2. 2 Gather all required identity, SSN, residency, and lawful presence documents
  3. 3 Visit a South Dakota DPS Driver Licensing Station
  4. 4 Complete the driver's license application
  5. 5 Pass the written knowledge test (25 questions, need 20 correct)
  6. 6 Pass the vision screening
  7. 7 Pay the $28 license fee
  8. 8 Schedule and pass the driving skills test

Important Notes

  • South Dakota requires proof of lawful presence — an ITIN alone is NOT sufficient for a driver's license
  • Non-citizen licenses are limited to the duration of authorized stay
